Q&A with adventure paddler James Cox

Paddling around Sweden in a Point 65 FREYA 18

We had the opportunity to chat with Brittish adventure paddler James Cox while making his final preparations for paddling the route The Sea Kayakers Blue Ribbon of Sweden.

James tells us that his adventure will start at the old Svinesund bridge on the West coast of Sweden. He'll be heading South along the West coast passing Gothenburg, Helsinborg and Malmo, before heading East along the South coast.

The adventure will come to an end when he touches Boarder No.59 at the outflow of the Torne River at Virtakari Point on the Swedish side just South of Haparanda.

In making this trip James hopes to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and Willen Hospice. He also hopes to raise awareness of Ocean Pollution.

What preparations have you made?
– I kind of wish it had already started. 12 month preparing have finally come to an end.
Can’t wait to get out on the water!

– During the winter my training has mainly been running, it’s just like training for a marathon, gradually building up the kilometers. I started kayaking as soon as the ice melted, 7km/hour paddling.
3000 km is a long way...
I think it’s difficult to focus on the end-point - You have to take it day-by-day but it would be fantastic to break the record.

– Packing-wize the Freya 18 has a lot of space which is great. However, I have tried to make her as light as possible, I’ve even cut the sleeves off my t-shirts. All my gear is very light and really, the food is what weighs the most. I have 30-40kg of food to last me 40 days. Hot breakfast and hot dinner, nuts and bars for lunch.

What are your expectations for this trip?
– What’s most important for me is to finish it. I would´t want to push myself so far that I injure myself and thereby not be able to finish, that would be a tragedy for me.

What is your impression of the kayak (FREYA 18) so far?
– I’ve been paddling for 15 years and this kayak is an absolute dream! I can roll it without any difficulty. You feel very safe in it. I’ve made some adjustments, adding things and taking things away that I don´t need for this journey.

What do you think is going to be the biggest challenge during your trip?
– The mental challenge. I’ve always wanted to have an adventure but it will be a challenge not to be able to have direct contact with family and friends.

– And obviously the weather is an issue and the biggest challenge physically. I’ve been in terrible conditions in Norway and it pushed me to an absolute extent. I really hope for good conditions, as weather will define this trip. I’ll have to pray to the nordic weather gods!

– Satellite tracker updates my location every ten minutes. I can send and receive texts, so I can always have contact which feels great.

Best of luck to you James!
