Introducing the Whisky 16 and DoubleShot
Some words with and about the designer Nigel Foster. For the 2008 season, Point 65 is proud to introduce two new touring kayaks. The Whisky 16 and the DoubleShot, both designed by Nigel Foster.

Point 65: Nigel, about the Whisky 16, what’s with the name?

Nigel: Whisky 16? Well, it is 16 feet long, hence that number and the whisky? Whisky has a movement connotation as well as the obvious drink. You whisk a liquid to make it frothy and more interesting, and the Whisky is designed for interesting waters... and I think it’s a catchy name that’s easy to remember. Plus personally on long trips at special moments, like after being face to face with a polar bear, well, a wee dram of whisky in a tiny ceramic cup can offer just the right amount of special celebration!

Point 65: So what did you aim for when designing the Whisky 16?
Nigel: I wanted a quick-turning relatively stable kayak to use for playing in rock-gardens, waves and surf.

Point 65: How would you describe the Whisky 16?

Nigel: Quickly responsive, light on the water and easy enough to spin without edging yet even quicker on edge... I can get an immediate reaction when I need it so I can relax in difficult conditions. I like it!

Point 65: Who do you envision paddling the Whisky 16?

Nigel: Actually the spectrum’s pretty broad; at one extreme it’s a kayak that handles comfortably in which beginners can feel relaxed in, but as it’s really designed for having fun in rough conditions, think “intermediate paddler/ instructor; people who want to catch that wave or squeeze through that gap, with control and finesse”. It’s for people who want to develop or sharpen their skills and get up to that next level of control!

Point 65: And what about the DoubleShot? What was your goal when designing it?
Nigel: That’s a design for any couple to enjoy. Its initial stability and easy turning for beginners is essential, but then it has the chines....

Point 65: What are the strengths of that design concept for a double seater?

Nigel: Well, the chines offer secondary stability with good tactile feedback about how far you are edging. Paddlers who are familiar with edging can make the Doubleshot turn on a dime... so it offers extra fun possibilities for those who want to add a little spice, yet it’s a comfortably reassuring craft if you want to avoid edging and just cruise with the rudder.

Point 65: Is the DoubleShot your first double-seater?

Nigel: Yes it is! But maybe not my last! There’s a lot of scope!

Point 65: How does it compare to designing a single seater?

Nigel: Actually the concepts are a little different; the main weight is spread fore and aft rather than centered as in a single, so the flotation characteristics need to work differently. The trim will also vary a lot with different combinations of paddlers, so again the kayak has to be forgiving enough to handle when badly trimmed. A double seater demands different design criteria, so it was interesting to work on, but in the end it has to be fun to use!
