Rescuing techniques: Getting help from a friend

In the event of capsizing, this is the easiest way of getting back into the cockpit again. It isn't hard, and it could save your life.

1. If you haven't mastered the eskimo-roll, using a blade-aid or getting into the kayak from the water by some other means, you shouldn't venture farther from land than you can swim without difficulty.

The safest way to paddle is of course not to paddle alone. Before setting out, you and a friend should practice this safety maneuver.

2. After you have capsized your friend should position himself in a "T" position for added stability, and hold onto the front end of your capsized kayak. Meanwhile, you will position yourself at the other end of the kayak.

3. Together you will know be able to turn the kayak onto it's keel. If the water is calm you will be able to empty it of water in this position. But your main objective is to get you out of the water as fast as possible and then empty the cockpit by hand or with a pump and get you to the nearest shore into dry clothes, especially when the water is cold.

4. Your friend should now position him/herself alongside your kayak and create a steady platform by pressing down both paddles onto the decks while holding onto the edges of your kayaks' cockpit.

5. After your friend has made this steady platform you will have positioned yourself between both kayaks at the back. Hold onto the outer edges of both kayaks and heave one leg onto the aft-deck of your kayak and into its cockpit.

6. When both your feet are in the cockpit you heave the rest of your body onto the aft deck of your kayak. Keep your body mass low for better balance so as no to capsize again - and pulling your friend down with you. Usually the water isn't calm when you capsize in the first place...

7. If you haven't emptied the cockpit of water before, this will be a safe position to pump/empty out the water while your friend still holds both kayaks.

8. Now you can continue on your way or get to shore to change into dry gear and get warm.

Good luck!
